Intacs for keratoconus have come to fill the gap between the contact lens and cornea transplants.
Intacs are rings (0.25 mm thick) small acrylic are placed between the layers of the cornea. These rings were first designed to treat nearsightedness. As a cornea transplant, Intacs rings actually add structural integrity of the cornea, which does not exist in keratoconus, Intacs and that's why for keratoconus can be a very useful process.
This treatment with Intacs for keratoconus can be performed on an outpatient basis and enables much faster than corneal transplant recovery.
Originally used for the purposes of refraction, Intacs for keratoconus patients have caused the stabilization and can also be a good option to reduce the possibility of keratoconus progress. Therefore Intacs for
keratoconus may be used:
- therapeutic treatment and
- to prevent disease progression.
Intacs for keratoconus patients who are also myopia (nearsightedness, myopia), can be corrected to 3.00 diopters of myopia in a normal healthy eye, but can significantly correct refractive errors in the eye affected by keratoconus.
Intacs for keratoconus may be helpful in patients who have developed intolerance to lenses. These patients may be able to wear contacts again after Intacs for keratoconus.
Intacs for keratoconus prescription inserts are suitable for use in the correction of myopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus where contact lenses and glasses are no longer adequate.
Also, Intacs for keratoconus are used as a therapeutic treatment for keratoconus corneas that have become unstable or weak due to ectasia.
Intacs for keratoconus prescription inserts are an exciting new option between contacts and a corneal transplant may be the best to stabilize the cornea and improve vision option.
The procedure for placing Intacs for keratoconus patients is done in three steps. In the first step an incision is made to a depth of 80% of the corneal thickness using an accurately calibrated instrument with a blade made of diamond. In the second step of this procedure Intacs for keratoconus the surgeon creates channels (tunnels) through corneal tissue for rings to be placed through the incision. In step three of the acrylic rings are inserted into the channels. When in place, these rings alter the shape of the cornea, creating a contour of the surface normal.
Studies on the effects of Intacs for keratoconus have shown that the cornea can take on a more regular round shape after the rings are implanted. Results depend on the shape of the cornea of each patient, but half of the patients who have had Intacs for keratoconus procedure have increased uncorrected vision of about five lines on a standard Snellen eye chart. This is the equivalent of 20/200 vision improves (legal blindness) to 20/50 (acceptable for driving in most states).
Corrected Vision increased by about three lines graphic eye in most patients treated with Intacs for keratoconus.
